I've been fans/buddies with this band for a while, and it's awesome to see them progress throughout the years. They've consistently put out new and excited records each year. I think I'd be hard pressed to find someone who doesn't like their music on some level. Alex's drum parts have always been cool and different, and this release is no different. These guys are spread out as per the diaspora of punk, hailing from different areas of the midwest and New York City. They play an extremely melodic, yet aggressive brand of punk rock that harkens back to M-Blanket and asks "what if Jawbreaker's first few records had good production quality?" The instrumentation is very dramatic and mature, complete with a horn section, harmonica and keys on top of the expected four-piece punk band set up. This eight song LP on...

Busman's Holiday is two brothers. Those two brothers make songs and get their friends to help them make music. The elder brother, Addison, plays a drum kit that includes a Samsonite suitcase bass drum. The younger brother, Lewis, plays an acoustic guitar. The two create harmonies and sing songs together. The music is melodic pop with influences from numerous genres. They listen to Randy Newman, Paul Simon, James Taylor, They Might Be Giants, Madlib, Joe Pass, and Beck; and other...

At first glance it's easy to make the one-off assumption that Slingshot Dakota are some sort of Mates of State tribute act -- the male/female couple, the keyboard lead, the often cute-sounding songs all add to this. But if you dig slightly below the surface you find a band that is fully their own, even on a three-song demo CD -- with obvious influences that span the gamut of independent music.
The first track, "White Couch" dispels the fear that somehow...

"What a fantastic find Each Other's Mothers has been. These four young ladies from New York play intricate, mathy instrumental rock. There is no wanking here, only precise and creative instrumentals that suck the listener in. Vocals only appear for a brief period as they work to build tension in...

Rainer Maria comparisons be damned, Houston, TX indie / emo band Football, etc. stand tall on their own merit. Rising from the ashes of the short-lived Tin Kitchen, the band’s no-nonsense approach to music is as refreshing as it is honest. - Sound as Language [ http://soundaslanguage.com/ ]

Stepping out from behind the drum-set of Lemuria, Alex grabs the reins, the horse and the whole carriage this time and takes the listener hostage. It's kind of crazy how musically talented Alex is.

Kevin Nunn of North Lincoln starts a band based on his love for NY's Potboiler. I can't think of anyone better to carry the torch of that awesome band. Hopefully they are able to go the distance and release a full length. I hope this band sticks around, at least until I get a chance to see them. Come to New York!

Maybe you didn't know, but punk rock music is as bad for your teeth as little debbie snack cakes and rock candy combined; I should now, considering I just spent the better part of my day waiting for my mouth to regain feeling after a procedure to fix the plane of my back teeth. Brainworms takes the best parts of Les Savy Fav; the angular guitars, intricate drumming, and merges it with energy and grit of RVA hardcore. The guitar work attacks you like an angry swarm of bees, darting in and out of your speakers. Greg Butler, the singer, sounds insane as he rants, screams, and protests through these ten songs. In celebration of their recent show and Pink Couch, I thought that it would be a good time to recommend that everyone go out and buy their new record.
Once I heard the first few seconds of the opener "Let it Breathe", I was hooked. I figured that for this release, I would eschew my normal badly written review and get some last minute blurbs from people who like the band. I looked up two message boards and asked people to say some nice stuff about these 3, and this is what I got.

Ok, so this comic doesn't have much to do with music, which is supposed to be the theme of these comics, but if you think about it, this poem is really more like an ode, and an ode is a lot like a hymn, and a hymn is just a song that's all religious or some shit; so in a really round-about way, this comic is kind of about music if you really stretch your imagination. I apologize that this comic is not only very wordy, but is also kind of a bum-out. The Exploding Hearts are one of those bands that I can always come back to, and find something new to like about their music, so it is of course quite disheartening that they were cut down in their prime, with only 2 albums worth of material to show for themselves. This comic is my ultimate band fantasy boner; as someone who's never had any musical talent, I will often listen to my favorite bands and fantasize that I'm the one playing the songs. This split is a refreshing chapter in the ever expanding book of noodle. Both GM and TGF apply the visceral, passionate, and strung out aggression that drew me to punk-rock from the very beginning while maintaining an air of maturity (without arrogance) that is almost lost in both punk and indie music.
