Laura Stevenson & The Cans

Holy Ghost!

Disclaimers
We used to live in the same apartment. Recently I played drums with them on way down to Fest. I'm the backup backup backup drummer. Laura also paid me to do the artwork, and then sat behind me the whole time. Lastly, my good friends at Mandible put out this record.

Ok, I think I got everything out in the open. With that said, I just wanted to let everyone know how much I love this record. It gives me an amazing goose-bumpy feeling when I listen to it. Each song is full of lush instrumentation that leaves you wondering where it came from.

The songs on this record start out quiet and intimate, like Stevenson is calling you close to tell you a story. All of sudden, the full band kicks in with such a full sound that enhances when she plays, and but never goes overboard. Horns, violins and bass pop out of the recording in perfect balance, driving the melody of the songs. The drums are seems so minimalistic, until you hit the marching style snare "Gathering and Leaping", a song which has baffled backup drummers abound. As quickly as the band entered, they exit, leaving you alone again with Laura as she closes the song.
